Organization Mission

"To use the bond between horse and human as a catalyst for positive growth, and through unconditional love and compassion, help people heal. We use innovative and integrative hands-on experiential learning to teach mindfulness techniques, and foster life skills through equine assisted psychotherapy, therapeutic riding, life skills groups and adaptive horse camps." Founder/Executive Director Terra Schaad describes the mission as "to teach the world to fear less and love more." Located at 12051 N 96th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. idealist + 2

Age Restrictions

Not explicitly published as a single minimum. Hunkapi relies heavily on volunteers and welcomes community volunteers; specific age policies should be confirmed with the farm. Volunteers are trained (e.g., to walk horses) before beginning their volunteer days.

Application Process

Sign up to volunteer via the Hunkapi website; volunteers receive training before their volunteer days start. Contact: love@hunkapi.org, (480) 841-5737. Facebook

Description of Volunteer Service

Volunteers care for the therapy herd — feeding, washing, and grooming horses; cleaning the farm; and preparing horses for sessions — and assist during equine-assisted therapy, therapeutic riding, life-skills groups, adaptive camps, and events (e.g., Christmas at the Farm). The 10-acre farm serves children, adults, and veterans, and takes in rescued/donated horses for life. Per City Sun Times, "Each week, Hunkapi serves between 250-300 people and provides opportunities for 75-100 volunteers" (Hunkapi's own materials now state it serves more than 300 clients each week)
