Organization Mission
HOBY's mission is "to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation." Founded in 1958 by actor Hugh O'Brian; HOBY reports over 500,000 alumni over its six-plus decades. HOBY Arizona (Arizona Leadership Seminar) is a child organization under the national HOBY exemption. Age Restrictions
Flagship State Leadership Seminars are for high school sophomores, who must be nominated/selected by their school. Volunteers who run seminars include adults and alumni, and many roles are open to older teens/alumni and adults. HOBY challenges ambassadors to complete 100 hours of community service ("Leadership for Service"/L4S) in the year after their seminar.
Application Process
Students attend by school nomination (one sophomore selected per school). Volunteers apply through HOBY Arizona to serve at the annual seminar. Per HOBY Arizona, 150+ high school ambassadors from across the state attended the 46th annual HOBY Arizona Youth Leadership Seminar, held June 5–8, 2025, at Arizona State University's Tempe campus. Description of Volunteer Service
Volunteers plan and staff the multi-day Arizona Leadership Seminar and related programs — facilitating small groups, running leadership activities and community-service projects, coordinating logistics, and mentoring high-school ambassadors. Adult and alumni volunteers keep the largely volunteer-run seminars operating.
