Organization Mission

"HeartBEATS is a youth-led organization dedicated to creating meaningful connections between newly-arrived refugees and their host community through music programs and activities, shared musical instruments, and music lessons. Our hope is that these shared musical experiences will bring joy and healing and help to build bridges of understanding and expand the cultural and arts education for all." HeartBEATS

Age Restrictions

No explicit minimum age is published. The organization is youth-led and specifically recruits teen musician volunteers, so it is oriented toward high-school-age volunteers. (Ambiguity note: "HeartBeats" is a common name; this Phoenix refugee-music nonprofit is the most likely Arizona youth-volunteer match, distinct from CPR-training or animal-therapy programs of similar names.) Application Process

No formal online application, orientation, background check, or fee is published. Interested volunteers email heartbeatsaz@gmail.com to be added to the volunteer list; participation is flexible and event-based. HeartBEATS

Description of Volunteer Service

Volunteers share music and cultural education with newly arrived refugee families across greater Phoenix, bringing instruments and leading songs at community events and apartment "welcome" visits (partnering with The Welcome to America Project and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest). Teen musicians teach free (including virtual) music lessons, and others collect instrument donations and assemble small "music kits" of rhythm instruments for refugee families.
